Mary Ellen Kustin to Run for School Board in Henderson County
Hendersonville, N.C. — Mother of two, active community member, and public policy
expert Mary Ellen Kustin is excited to announce her bid for the Henderson County
Board of Public Education.
“Public schools are the foundation of our democracy,” Kustin said. “I believe every kid in
Henderson County should have access to an honest and accurate education and safe
and fully funded schools! We all benefit when our public schools shine!”
Mary Ellen is committed to using taxpayer dollars wisely to retain hard-working teachers
and staff and provide necessary resources to set up students and families for success.
Before and after staying home through her children’s early years, Mary Ellen’s career
has been in the nonprofit sector where she’s able to live out her values of community
service. Her first time running for office was in 2022 when she lost her bid for school
board by only 1% of the vote.

Mary Ellen enjoyed a high-quality public education from kindergarten through graduate
school. She has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a master’s degree in
sustainable development and conservation biology as well as a master’s degree in
public policy.
Her commitment to academics and community service are reflected by her
memberships in Phi Beta Kappa, Pi Mu Epsilon, the City of Hendersonville
Environmental Sustainability Board, and the Kiwanis Club of Hendersonville.
